Hyundai Engineers Collaborate on Historic Pony Coupe Concept

Looking to the past in order to build the future; that was the theme of the inaugural Hyundai Reunion as Hyundai Motor Company gathered in Lake Como, Italy. It’s the birthplace of the Pony Concept Coupe, a slick two-door sports car created out of pure will in the midst of a nationwide recession. After making waves at the 1974 Turin Motor Show, the concept fizzled out. Despite that, Hyundai remained strong, and the recent Hyundai Reunion saw a sneak peek into the future of Hyundai while paying homage to the past.

Past, Present, and Future

At the reunion, former and current Hyundai engineers met up to celebrate the unveiling of the restoration of the original 1974 Pony Concept that inspired the iconic Pony lineup. Created to bring back the struggling economy after the Korean War, the Pony Coupe Concept started as an idea that snowballed into what the Hyundai brand is today. The recreation shows off the determination of Hyundai’s beginnings as well as what it hopes to see in the future as electrified models take over. Although the concept never made it to production, Hyundai plans to hold the values that made them a global powerhouse in the automotive world while looking forward towards innovation and progress.

Along with a recreation of the Pony, Hyundai presented the N Vision 74, a concept based on the Pony with futurized technology and electrified performance. The N Vision 74 is a hydrogen-hybrid model that shows off what Hyundai Motors hopes will become reality. It has independent dual motors near the rear wheels, an 85 kWh hydrogen fuel cell, and a 62 kWh lithium-ion battery fueled by two 2.1kg hydrogen tanks. The hydrogen concept car can travel up to 600 kilometers, or nearly 375 miles, on the fuel-cell hybrid architecture specially engineered by Hyundai.

Hyundai hopes to utilize events like the Hyundai Reunion to continue building its heritage as it leads the way toward the future of the brand. In the midst of electrification, both the Pony Coupe Concept and N Vision 74 represent everything that Hyundai Founding Chairman Ju-young Chung stood for. His vision of creating a sports car from nothing led the brand to what it is today: a strong presence in the automotive community worldwide.
