Why you want a home charging station for your EV

The best companion to your Rairdon’s Hyundai EV is a Level 2 home charging station.  While all EVs can plug into a conventional 110-120-volt home socket (Level 1), the time it takes for a full charge could be prohibitive for many people.  Typically, Level 1 charging will add 4 to 6 miles for each hour of charging.  An overnight Level 1 charge might be sufficient if your commute is short, but most EV owners would probably prefer to charge their car fully, which can take 35 to 50 hours at Level 1 depending on the model and level of initial charge.

Level 2 Home Charging

If you own your home or a parking space with electrical access, a Level 2 home charging station can make recharging more convenient by fully charging most EV models in seven hours or less.  Using the charger is as simple as plugging into a wall socket, so now you can come home from work, connect to the charger, and be fully charged the next day before you set out for work again.  If your electricity rates drop after a certain time in the evening, you can even set a timer in the car or through the Hyundai app to begin charging at the time when the rates are reduced.  While Ioniq 5 and 6 models are known for their very fast Level 3 or fast DC-direct charging ability, Level 3 is generally considered for use when recharging on long distance trips and is neither available nor recommended for home use.

How to Install a Level 2 Home Charging Station

There are several Level 2 charging stations on the market.  They can be free-standing or wall-mounted, but one thing they all have in common is they use a 220 – 240 wall plug such as used for electric clothes dryers or deep freezers. Since you are unlikely to want to constantly swap between drying your clothes and charging your car, it is recommended that you hire a certified electrician to add such a plug and install your Level 2 charger near where you park your car.

Level 1 & 2  plugs and your car’s socket are well insulated to charge in rainy or snowy weather, so you do not need to install the charger or charge your car in a garage.  However, surrounding temperature can affect charge times with lower temperatures slowing the process, so charging in your garage does have the advantage of keeping charge times more consistent.
