Hyundai of Bellingham Celebrates Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, and honestly, it probably doesn’t get all the attention it deserves. That’s why we wanted to take some time to share a few facts and thoughts about this holiday for recognition and awareness.

At Hyundai of Bellingham, of course, we are focused primarily on the history of automotive. Here in the United States, we all no doubt learn about names like Henry Ford in school but rarely do we learn about some of the women who had just as large of an impact on the auto industry throughout its history.

One such woman with an interesting story is June McCarroll. In 1917, she was driving down the highway in California when her car came face-to-face with a large truck. Knowing that her options were to either collide with the truck or take her chances driving into the ditch, she drove into the ditch. Thankfully, she suffered no injuries, but it sparked the idea in her head of marking the roadway with lines for designated lanes as a safety measure. Her campaign eventually lead to these lines being implemented in California and then elsewhere across the country.

Here’s another story. Have you ever heard the name Hedy Lamarr? You may know her as an actress, which she was, from the earlier years of Hollywood. What you may not know is that she is also responsible for the technology used to implement Bluetooth capability in our vehicles today.
